Living proof that TBR piles have no limit

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

In a village with this many secrets, a murder is just the beginning…

On New Year’s Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests.

He’s celebrating the success of his lakeside holiday homes, and has generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbours.

By midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.

On New Year’s Day, DC Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects.

She grew up in the tiny community, so the murder suspects are her neighbours, friends and family – and Ffion has her own secrets to protect.

With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn’t who wanted Rhys dead . . . but who finally killed him.

Mrs G’s Review

Gripping and utterly captivating — The Last Party draws you in from the first chapter and never lets up. The characters are fantastic, layered, and full of the kind of depth that makes you genuinely care what happens to them.

The story unfolds across two timeframes: the present day, when the body is discovered, and the lead‑up to the death. Secrets simmer everywhere, and while the plot isn’t breakneck fast, it never once feels slow. The tension builds beautifully, and each new reveal adds another piece to the puzzle, keeping you hooked right to the end.

I read this in just three days because I simply couldn’t put it down. A brilliant, compelling read from Clare Mackintosh — and an easy five stars from me.
